Our Necessary First Priority

June 1, 2025
As pilots, we are faced with making decisions at every turn. Have you ever thought about how many decisions you make and which ones are critical to ensuring a safe flight? For example, if you were planning a trip to visit a friend for lunch and returning the same day you would likely consider which day to go, what time to depart and return, the weather forecast, are there any NOTAMs or TFRs, departure and arrival airports (if there were options), runway lengths/condition, whether there’s an FBO and fuel available, your physical state, and so on. After that we turn our attention to the airplane we will be flying. We assess the overall condition of the airplane and many of the moving parts, as well as check the levels of critical fluids (fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid). Lastly, we climb onto our trusty step and into our Beechcraft®. Final decisions on whether we will forge ahead with a flight will be made all the way up to the moment just before our tires leave the pavement. Of course, there are decisions after that moment, but I want you to consider this phase of flight for now.
